Haven't found a lot about the speedevents yet, I will keep this one up to date. Maybe you know some events that will not continue, or do you know new official events, or do you have anything to add? Please share...
Update 26/01/09: The question is not when, but will there be official speedevents in 2009?

Toegevoegd! Thanks Herman
ReplyDeleteI read some frustrating news on www.surf-forum.com, the question is:
ReplyDeleteWill there be a speedworldcup ranking this year?
I can confirm several National events and 'fun' speedevents will continue.
All serious speedattempts have been canceled too (Masters of Speed/Driven by Wind). I hope to see some action in the Speed:world:cup this year...
-Erik
It is very interesting, the fun events grew up and the official events don't take part any more.
ReplyDeleteI think you have read it in the forum: For the Event at Tarifa (which should be part of the speedtour 2008) there ins't much hope for the next years, not only for 2009!
Pat
Pat,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, I never would have thought official events would dissapear this quick!
The fun format is growing worldwide that is a fact. But for a very small group a official event should be maintained. Now I am really considering participation for Gruissan event. Just for experience. It could be the last time this format...
Don't know yet what to do... Can you convince me, please comment!
Gruissan will still exist after 2009, because our Belgian group is just doing it for fun and doesn't work with prizemoney, officials,....
ReplyDeleteThis year I will participate in organising the gps-part of the speedweek (all competitors wear a personal gps and after a readout only their 2 fastest runs will be checked on videotiming, because checking all runs for 70 competitors is not possible).
This weekend in Reeuwijk the GPS-Speedsurfing crew told me that the top 25 of USM will compete in a spectacular format!
ReplyDeleteOn a spot like Oosterland "the Brace", with serious wind. I hope this format will be successful.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteat first about the official events:
I don't think it is the end of the official events, if it is not possible to run a speed tour 2009. As Thorsten said, the problem isn't to find spots or interested people (for example Arinaga was interested), it's the money. If I remind correctly Masters of Speed had to stop for a while some years ago, but it has recovered. Maybe 2010 there's enough money, who knows.
Gruissan:
I know the pictured and so on form 2008. Looks like a nice event with "a lot" of people. Of course it's far away form Holland, only just for fun. If you know before starting you will finish at the last place with 10knots less I think it isn't interesting because of the distance. But I know you are quite fast and on the otherhand it is like a holiday, why shouldn't you go?!
GPS-Speedsurfing Crew:
I like the style the dutch guys are working on these aspects!

Thanks Herman for the link, 5 official speedevents till this point, not bad. In 2008 ISWC did count 12 official speedevents.
ReplyDeleteSpeedevents in Sweden:
ReplyDelete1-3 Maj SWT Öland norra udde
21-23 Maj SWT Öland, Haga Park
30-31 Maj SWT Klagshamn
3-4 Oktober SWT (SM) Torkelstorp
Thank you Björn!
